The HIPPO gas-jet is the helium target coupled to the St. George recoil separator at the University of Notre Dame’s Nuclear Science Laboratory. Together, these devices will be used to measure numerous (α,γ) reactions of astrophysical interest. In this work, we began the process of optimizing the performance of HIPPO as a nuclear reaction target for St. George by benchmarking computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations against elastic scattering measurements of the jet aerial density. We found encouraging agreement between data and simulations, paving the way for future optimization of HIPPO with CFD calculations. Learn more
