Spectroscopy and imaging for nuclear engineering and safeguards

Prof. Angela Di Fulvio
University of Illinois

Compliance of member States to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is monitored through nuclear safeguards. Recent developments in scintillation detectors and electronics have enabled important improvements in safeguards systems. In this talk, I will present recent results in the characterization of a new deuterated stilbene scintillator and associated algorithms for neutron spectrum unfolding. I will then give an overview of how similar algorithms can be applied to perform Passive Gamma Emission Tomography (PGET) of spent nuclear fuel and to identify and hence track TRISO fuel pebbles in high temperature gas or molten salt-cooled reactors.
