A snapshot of Materials Research at NRL: from SIMS-AMS to Printed Electronics

Dr. Alberto Piqué
Naval Research Laboratory

This talk aims to introduce various projects from the Materials Science Division at the Naval Research Laboratory. I will begin with a description of the capabilities of the NAval Ultra-Trace Isotope Laboratory's Universal Spectrometer (NAUTILUS).  NAUTILUS is an NRL-built instrument that combines secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and single-stage accelerator mass spectrometry (SSAMS) for spatially resolved trace element and isotope analysis. I will then present work on developing techniques for standoff detection of explosives and dangerous chemicals using IR spectroscopic techniques. Finally, I will discuss the use of laser-based transfer techniques for printing a wide range of materials from silver nano-inks to entire functional devices, such as LEDs in order to fabricate electrical interconnects, circuit patterns and hybrid printed electronics.

This work was funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) through the Naval Research Laboratory Basic Research Program.
