Two lies that killed nuclear electricity
Dr. Jack Devanney
The nuclear power establishment has promulgated two lies:
- Any sizable release of radioactive material from a nuclear power plant would be a catastrophe.
- The probability of such a release is so low we don’t have to worry about it.
Nobody believes the second lie and properly so. The presentation focuses on the first lie: its origin, why it’s false, and its foundation, the Linear No Threshold theory of radiation harm. An alternate sigmoid dose response model is proposed and applied to the radiation releases at Chernobyl and Fukushima. The argument is made that an occasional release is tolerable in return for the benefits of dispatchable, resource efficient, pollution free, and nearly CO2 free electricity.
The presentation is based on the book Why Nuclear Power has been a Flop, which can be downloaded for free from gordianknotbook.com
